Importing a vehicle
(New vehicles coming from foreign countries or vehicles previously registered abroad)

Vehicles coming from non-EU countries
First of all it is necessary to register the vehicle with the Provincial Motorization Office. Once the registration certificate has been obtained, the vehicle can be registered with the Public Register of Motor Vehicles (PRA) by submitting the following documents:

  • Ownership certificate 
    • If the applicant is already the owner and this is shown in the foreign registration certificate - declaration of ownership with authenticated signature
    • If the applicant is someone other than the registered owner mentioned in the foreign registration certificate - deed of sale with signature authenticated by a notary or public deed or sentence
  • Personal identity document:  if this document is in a foreign language an Italian translation must be attached (unless an exemption is applicable under international laws or agreements), certified as being a true and faithful rendition of the original document by the competent diplomatic or consular representative, or by an official translator
  • Residence certificate of the applicant - unless residence is already indicated in the identity document
  • NP2B form for registration with the PRA, available at ACI-PRA offices, the provincial offices of Civil Motorization (UMC) and on the website http://www.aci.it/index.php?id=2160. The purchaser's tax code must be indicated in the form
  • Photocopy of the registration certificate issued in Italy.

Vehicles coming from EU countries
Documents to be presented if the vehicle is new (never registered before):

  • A photocopy of the purchaser's identity document. 
    If this document is in a foreign language an Italian translation must be attached (unless an exemption is applicable under international laws or agreements), certified as being a true and faithful rendition of the original document by the competent diplomatic or consular representative, or by an official translator. 
  • Residence certificate of the purchaser or "declaration in lieu of certification" if residence is not indicated in the identity document, even if the purchaser is an Italian citizen residing abroad and registered with AIRE. Citizens of the European Union (EU) can also submit a photocopy of the certificate issued by the Municipality proving that they have applied for residence, or a photocopy of the certificate of permanent residence issued by the Municipality in which they reside.
  • NP2B form for registration with the PRA, available at ACI-PRA offices, the provincial offices of Civil Motorization (UMC) and on the website http://www.aci.it/index.php?id=2160. The purchaser's tax code must be indicated in the form.
  • "Istanza dell'acquirente" (purchaser's application form) or deed of sale or public deed or sentence.
    The deed of sale must bear the seller's signature authenticated by a notary and revenue stamps.
  • Declaration of conformity or European Certificate of Conformity with Italian type approval or European Certificate of Conformity accompanied by a "dichiarazione di immatricolazione" (statement of registration) issued by the manufacturer. 
  • TT 2119 application form signed by the purchaser, available at the provincial offices of Civil Motorization (UMC). 
  • If the purchaser is a legal entity (company, body, association, etc.):  Certificate of the Chamber of Commerce with revenue stamps or replacement declaration made by the legal representative to certify the registered office of the legal entity.
  • If the purchaser is a non-EU citizen that is resident in Italy: a copy of a valid residence permit, or a copy of an expired residence permit including copy of the postal receipt of the application for renewal; or a photocopy of the identity document and photocopy of the receipt certifying application for the first issue of the residence permit; or a copy of the EC residence permits for long-term residents.
  • If the purchaser is a non-EU citizen relative of a European Union citizen who is resident in Italy:  a copy of the "residence permit for relatives of a European Union citizen" or a copy of the "permanent residence permit for relatives of European citizens".
  • A request note for updating the registration certificate.

Documents to be presented if the vehicle is used:

  • A photocopy of the purchaser's identity document.

    If the applicant is already the owner abroad and this is indicated in the foreign registration certificate, a declaration of ownership can be submitted with the signature authenticated by a notary or by a Municipality or by a Motorist's Telematic Counter (STA).
  • Foreign Registration certificate and a photocopy of the same.
  • TT 2119 application form signed by the purchaser, available at the provincial offices of Civil Motorization (UMC).
  • If the purchaser is a legal entity (company, body, association, etc.):  Certificate of the Chamber of Commerce with revenue stamps or replacement declaration made by the legal representative to certify the registered office of the legal entity.

  • For used vehicles coming from Germany and registered in Germany up to 31.5.2004 the original ownership document (Fahrzeugbrief) must be submitted. For used vehicles coming from Germany and registered in Germany as from 1.06.2004 a copy of the Fahrzeugbrief or a copy of the new ownership document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II) must be submitted.
